Wood Fence With Hidden Steel Posts

Our Fence Installation Services

Superior Fence Construction and Repair, Inc. (now rebranding as Fantastic Fence) is the leading residential and commercial fence contractor in the Rocklin, CA and Sacramento, CA areas. We offer many options for metal posts for fences and gates, but bolt-up hidden steel posts are preferred.

At Fantastic Fence, we provide specialized bolt-up hidden steel post installation services. Our experts are skilled in setting up fence posts that are not only sturdy but also aesthetically pleasing. Whether you need wood fence posts or prefer metal fence posts, we’ve got you covered.

Pressure treated wood fence posts historically have been the most common baseline fence posts because of their ease of use, and relatively low cost. However, wood posts don’t last as long and will fail much sooner than a galvanized steel fence post. Additionally, the pressure treated wood posts we can source today are not the same as they were 10 years ago. We have found pressure treated wood posts rot out and break much sooner than they used to since the chemical treatments used were changed a few years back to make it more ecologically friendly. In the end, metal fence posts are the most commonly requested post nowadays because they are stronger, last longer, and require less upkeep. Metal posts cost more upfront but will extend the life of your fence many more years.

Benefits of Bolt-Up Hidden Fence Posts

There are numerous benefits to using bolt-up hidden fence posts. Firstly, they’re incredibly robust and durable. Made from galvanized steel, these fence posts are resistant to rust and corrosion, ensuring longevity. Secondly, they offer a range of fencing options to suit different needs and preferences. Unlike traditional wood fence and gate posts, our steel posts are hidden, providing a clean, seamless look to your fence.

Our customers have been requesting hidden galvanized metal posts for their fences. We install these now on more than 70% of our fences. They want the hidden metal posts for their fence replacement because of the added longevity they offer. Each of these homeowners has learned that usually, the first part of the fence that fails is the posts, so by switching over to a hidden galvanized steel post, they will ensure themselves a longer fence lifespan. This is an investment in the longevity of your fence for sure!

Here’s a quick look at some of the key benefits of installing bolt-up hidden steel fence posts:

  • Durability: Made from galvanized steel, these posts are designed to resist rust and corrosion, ensuring they last much longer than traditional wood or metal posts. No more rotting fence posts!
  • Aesthetics: The hidden nature of these posts means they don’t interfere with the visual appeal of your fence. Whether you choose a wood or metal fence, the posts remain concealed, providing a clean, seamless look.
  • Flexibility: Bolt-up hidden steel fence posts are easy to install and can be extended or adjusted as needed, offering flexibility in fence and gate design and layout.
  • Value: While the upfront cost might be higher than other posts, long-term maintenance and replacement cost savings make them cost-effective.
  • Strength: Using steel gives these posts superior strength, allowing them to withstand harsh weather conditions and heavy loads, making your fence more stable and secure. Steel posts are less prone to warping or twisting, helping to maintain the straight and even appearance of the fence over time.

While bolt-up hidden steel fence posts might have a higher upfront cost than pressure-treated wood fence posts, they offer more value in the long run. Thanks to their superior durability, minimal maintenance requirements, and longer lifespan, they can actually save you money over time.

We have seen and installed thousands of these over the years, and the advantage of the Bolt Ups is that they are a time-tested solution that we can confidently use in all fence, gate, and retainer wall applications. In our opinion, they do not have the same wobble/flex as the other post options. While some of these other fence posts try to market that this flex is intentional and will help in windy conditions, I have yet to meet a homeowner who wants this flex and wobble.

Additionally, some of these other steel post options have other downsides with how they integrate with kickboards, lattice, and retainer walls. Ultimately, the choice is yours, and we will give our opinions to the best of our experience. Still, after installing thousands of fences a year, our experience has shown us to be much happier with the bolt-up hidden steel post option.

No, the galvanized steel posts are covered with redwood and you will not see them! As you can see in the pictures, the 2 3/8 steel posts are covered on two sides with 2×4 redwood rails, and we covered the face with pickets during the finishing stages of building the fence and gate. The beauty of bolt-up hidden steel posts is that they are completely concealed within the wood fence, making them invisible to the naked eye. This means that they won’t alter the appearance of your wood fence but will significantly enhance its strength and stability.

Absolutely! Bolt-up hidden steel posts are designed to outperform and outlast traditional pressure-treated wood posts. The galvanized steel used in their construction resists rot, insects, and weather-related damage, ensuring they stand firm for years.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wood Fences

In most cases, putting up wooden fencing by yourself presents a set of challenges. You have to draw up a good plan, acquire proper materials, perform all the measurements, and do all the manual labor, which can be difficult for property owners to do alone.

There are additional aspects to take under consideration as well, like the terrain you’re working on, fence height, the materials and techniques that will be most suitable for your needs, and the effect you wish to achieve — all of which can be easier to determine and implement with the support of a good wood fence contractor.

That is why most clients benefit from working with a team of experts, even when the installation or repair costs are higher.

The most durable wood fences are Redwood fences. Redwood offers a timeless and natural look and is resistant to rot and insects. In addition, it’s a very stable wood with little seasonal movement, perfect for outdoor constructions like wood fencing.

Redwood wooden fences can last 20 years or more if properly maintained. White Cedar and Red Cedar are other popular wood types for wooden fencing.

For a privacy fence, wood is usually the cheapest option in the Sacramento, CA, area. Another option is Vinyl/PVC fencing. Vinyl can be used to replace wood in picket fences, stakes, and wood fencing panels. Another cheap alternative is wire and plain wooden or metal posts as fencing.

These solutions, however, don’t provide you with many benefits that wooden fences do. A wire fence is not aesthetically pleasing and won’t protect you from your nosy neighbors. It makes sense if you’re looking for fencing for livestock.

Vinyl will not look natural, so this wouldn’t be the best pick if that is the effect you care about.

And although vinyl or aluminum fences are known for their durability, once destroyed, they are harder to repair than wood fences, which is something to consider when choosing fencing that will serve you for years.

As we mentioned earlier, there are different types of wooden fences. Every solution has advantages and disadvantages, so that the final choice will depend on your priorities, style preferences, and budget.

One of the most popular wood fence styles is the dog ear fence style, which provides lots of privacy in your backyard while still being very affordable. With characteristic angled cuts on both sides of the top of each plank, it’s a safe and reliable choice for many house styles.

The board-on-board style is another great option if you want even more privacy. This style is known for the sturdy construction of overlapping every other picket to the opposite side of the rails. This provides you with maximum privacy in your garden. Not to mention, it’s one of the more modern-looking wood fence styles offered on the market.

Some prefer the simple yet classic picket fence style that offers lots of sunlight for your garden plants but less privacy for you, while others will be content with the cap and trim fence, which provides more of a decorative effect than the standard wood fences.

Wood fencing made from durable material and used with proper techniques can last 20 years or more. Usually, the first repairs regard posts, whereas panels have a higher chance of staying in good condition for longer because they don’t touch the ground.

Either way, this has been an investment for decades. Choosing the right team of professionals and the best wood fence styles protects your home and garden from trespassing, wind, and glances from your neighbors for years ahead of you.
