Why Ornamental Iron Is the Most Popular Pool Fence in Sacramento
When it comes to pool fencing, ornamental iron is the clear favorite among Sacramento homeowners — and for good reason. Here’s why most of our pool fence customers choose iron:
This is the biggest advantage. Iron’s open picket design gives you a clear line of sight to the pool from your patio, kitchen window, or anywhere in the yard. When kids are swimming, you can always see them. That visibility is a safety feature in itself.
Solid fences — whether removable mesh, vinyl privacy panels, or chain link with privacy slats — create visual walls around the pool that can make even a large yard feel smaller and more enclosed. Iron keeps the space feeling open while still providing a secure barrier.
Potential premium discounts in fire-prone areas for non-combustible fencing.
Sacramento’s dry climate is ideal for iron fencing. With a quality powder coat finish, ornamental iron holds up exceptionally well in our 100°F+ summers and requires very little maintenance over its lifetime.
Unlike removable options, a permanent iron pool fence is always working — even when you forget, even when you’re busy, even when guests are over. There’s no setup, no teardown, and no chance someone forgets to reinstall it.
Ornamental Iron vs. Removable Mesh Pool Fences
Many homeowners debate between a permanent ornamental iron pool fence and a removable mesh fence. Here’s why we strongly recommend — and only install — permanent pool fencing:
In many California jurisdictions, removable mesh pool fences do not meet pool barrier safety requirements because they are “removable” by definition. A permanent pool fence is the safer and more compliant choice. Fantastic Fence installs only permanent pool fencing.
The bottom line: ornamental iron gives you full visibility, permanent protection, an open backyard feel, and decades of reliable safety. Removable mesh has to be set up and taken down, blocks your view of the pool, can make the space feel enclosed, and may not even pass inspection in your area.
Why Homeowners Keep Their Pool Fence Long After They Think They’ll Take It Down
Here’s something we hear all the time: homeowners install a pool fence thinking they’ll remove it once their kids learn to swim. But almost nobody does. Here’s why:
Parties, Gatherings, and Family Events
When you host a birthday party, a barbecue, a holiday gathering, or any event with other people’s children, your pool becomes a liability. With a pool fence and a locked gate, you can enjoy the event without spending the entire time watching the pool. The fence does the worrying for you.
Your Kids Can Swim — But Their Friends Might Not
Your child may be a strong swimmer. But when their friends come over, you don’t always know who can swim and who can’t. A pool fence lets kids play in the yard without unrestricted access to the pool. You’re not constantly monitoring every child — the fence provides a barrier that buys you time and safety.
It Keeps Pets Out of the Pool
Dogs, especially, can fall into pools and struggle to get out. A pool fence keeps pets safely on the other side until you’re ready to supervise. This is a benefit many homeowners don’t think about until they have the fence — and then they’re glad it’s there.
Peace of Mind Never Gets Old
Even after your children grow up, the pool fence continues to serve a purpose. Visiting grandchildren, neighborhood kids, pets, and general liability concerns all make a permanent pool fence a smart long-term feature of your home.
“I thought we’d take it down after a year or two. It’s been five years and I can’t imagine not having it. Every time we have people over, I’m so glad the pool is fenced off.”
— This is the kind of feedback we hear regularly from Sacramento families.
Other Pool Fence Options
While ornamental iron is our most popular pool fence material, there are other options that can meet code requirements depending on your situation:
Vinyl pool fencing can be compliant when installed in a picket style that allows visibility through the fence. Solid vinyl privacy panels have the same drawbacks as any solid barrier — they block your view of the pool and make the space feel enclosed. If vinyl appeals to you for its low-maintenance qualities, a picket-style design is the way to go for pool applications.
Chain link can meet pool barrier requirements, but adding privacy slats creates a solid visual wall that eliminates your ability to see the pool from the outside. If the fence is close to the pool, this is a significant safety concern — you can’t see if a child is in the water. It also makes the pool area feel much more enclosed from the inside. For these reasons, chain link with slats is not our recommended option for pool fencing in most situations.
Pool Gates: The Most Critical Part of Your Pool Fence
Your pool gate is where compliance and safety meet. Every pool fence we install includes a gate that meets these key requirements:
Self-closing
The gate closes automatically every time, without anyone needing to remember.
Self-latching
The latch engages on its own when the gate closes.
Opens away from the pool (outswing)
This prevents a child from pushing the gate open toward the water.
Latch height
The opening mechanism must be at least 54” above the ground — some jurisdictions require 60”.
Gate rules are just as strict as fence rules. We make sure every gate we install meets the applicable requirements for your area.

Sacramento Area Pool Fence Code & Compliance
Pool fence safety requirements vary by city and county. Here are the general requirements that apply in most areas:
Barrier heighT
At least 60 inches above grade, measured on the side facing away from the pool.
Bottom clearance
Maximum 2 inches between grade and the bottom of the fence (4 inches on solid surfaces like concrete).
Picket spacing
No gap large enough to allow a 4-inch sphere to pass through.
Gate
Self-closing, self-latching, outswing, with latch mechanism at least 54–60 inches above grade.
Always consult your local building and zoning department for specific requirements. Rules can vary by jurisdiction, and your pool builder or inspector can confirm what applies to your property.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pool Fencing
Are removable mesh pool fences code-compliant in California?
In many local jurisdictions, removable mesh fences do not meet pool safety barrier requirements because they are classified as “removable.” Fantastic Fence installs only permanent pool fencing designed for compliance.
How long does pool fence installation take?
Most pool fence projects are completed in one day, depending on the layout and material.
Do you handle permits?
We do not pull permits, but we assist homeowners with general guidance related to pool fencing requirements and can share relevant information to help you navigate the process.
What’s the most popular pool fence material?
Ornamental iron is by far the most popular choice for pool fencing in the Sacramento area. It provides full visibility of the pool, meets code requirements, looks beautiful, and lasts for decades with minimal maintenance.
Can I see the pool through an iron pool fence?
Yes — that’s one of the biggest reasons homeowners choose it. Iron’s open picket design gives you a clear line of sight to the pool from anywhere in the yard, which is a significant safety advantage over solid barriers.
Do pool fences need self-closing gates?
Yes. All pool fences we install include self-closing, self-latching gates that open away from the pool. These are required by code and are the most critical safety feature of your pool enclosure.
Will I really keep the pool fence after my kids learn to swim?
Almost everyone does. Homeowners consistently tell us the pool fence stays up because of birthday parties, playdates with kids who may not swim, pets, visiting grandchildren, and the simple peace of mind of knowing the pool is always secured.
