Why Choose Fantastic Fence

Low Maintenance. Long Lasting. Built for Sacramento.

Chain link fencing might not be the first thing that comes to mind when Sacramento homeowners think about upgrading their yard — but maybe it should be. A properly installed galvanized chain link fence routinely lasts 30 to 50 years with virtually no maintenance. That’s longer than wood, vinyl, or almost any other residential fence material. The only damage we typically see on chain link is from vehicles hitting it or from someone intentionally cutting the mesh. The material itself doesn’t rot, doesn’t warp, doesn’t attract insects, and handles Sacramento’s extreme heat and wet winters without any special treatment.

Chain link has an old reputation as an industrial-looking fence, but that’s changing. With black vinyl coating and privacy slats, a modern residential chain link fence looks clean, blends with landscaping, and provides the same security and durability at a significantly lower cost than wood or iron. It’s a practical, honest material — and more Sacramento homeowners are choosing it every year.

Where Sacramento Homeowners Install Chain Link

Backyard and Property Line Fencing

The most common residential chain link application is a full backyard enclosure or property line fence. Chain link creates a clear, secure boundary at a fraction of the cost of wood or vinyl privacy fencing. For homeowners with larger lots who want to define their property without spending a fortune, chain link is the most cost-effective way to fence a big area.

Dog Runs and Pet Containment

Chain link is one of the best materials for pet containment. Dogs can’t chew through it, can’t push through it, and with proper installation (including a bottom tension wire or concrete footer), they can’t dig under it. Many of our residential customers specifically choose chain link because they need a secure, durable enclosure their dogs can’t defeat — and it holds up to daily use far better than wood, which dogs can scratch, chew, and push apart over time.

Backyard Tennis Courts and Pickleball Courts

Private backyard sports courts are increasingly popular in the Sacramento area, and chain link is the standard fencing material for both tennis and pickleball. Court fencing requires a slightly smaller mesh — typically 1.75-inch diamond — to contain balls effectively. We also use 9-gauge wire (commercial grade) for all court fencing, even on residential properties, because the mesh takes regular ball impact and needs to hold up without deforming over years of play.

Pool Enclosures (with Privacy Slats)

Here’s something many homeowners don’t know: when you add privacy slats to a chain link fence, it becomes non-climbable and pool-code compliant. The slats fill the diamond openings that would otherwise provide hand and foot holds, eliminating the climbability issue that prevents standard chain link from meeting pool safety requirements in many jurisdictions. This makes chain link with privacy slats a budget-friendly alternative to ornamental iron or vinyl for pool enclosures.

Galvanized vs. Black Vinyl-Coated: Choosing Your Look

We install residential chain link in two finishes:

Finish
Look
Best For
Galvanized (Silver)
Classic metallic silver
Budget-focused projects, backyards where appearance is secondary, dog runs, side yards
Vinyl-Coated Black
Matte black that blends with landscaping
Front-facing fencing, properties where you want the fence to virtually disappear, anywhere curb appeal matters

Both finishes last decades. The vinyl coating is purely an aesthetic upgrade — it doesn’t add meaningful lifespan over galvanized. But the visual difference is significant: black vinyl-coated chain link practically disappears against dark backgrounds like trees, shrubs, and dark-colored homes. It looks far less industrial than silver and gives the property a cleaner, more modern appearance. For most residential customers, black bonded is what we recommend.

Brown and green vinyl coatings are also available for properties where those colors better match the surroundings.

Privacy Slats: Turn Chain Link into a Privacy Fence

One of the smartest upgrades for residential chain link is adding privacy slats. These are vertical inserts woven into the mesh that block sight lines, giving you privacy from neighbors without switching to a completely different fence type. Slats also keep pets and children from being visible (and distracted) through the fence, and they add a finished, polished look to the installation.

Viewguard (Standard)

Individual slats that provide solid coverage across the mesh. Available in colors to match your chain link finish.

Viewguard PLUS

A premium slat with a winged design that covers each twist tie point, eliminating the small gaps that standard slats leave. Creates a more uniform, complete privacy barrier.

DID YOU KNOW?

Adding privacy slats to chain link makes the fence non-climbable — which means it meets pool safety code requirements in most jurisdictions. If you’re looking for an affordable pool fence option, chain link with Viewguard PLUS slats is worth considering.

Wire Gauge and Mesh Size: What Homeowners Should Know

Two specifications define the strength of a chain link fence:

Wire gauge

Standard residential chain link is 11-gauge wire — a good balance of strength and flexibility for most home applications. For backyard sports courts or areas that take more abuse, we upgrade to 9-gauge (commercial grade) for added durability.

Mesh size

Chain link can meet pool barrier requirements, but adding privacy slats creates a solid visual wall that eliminates your ability to see the pool from the outside. If the fence is close to the pool, this is a significant safety concern — you can’t see if a child is in the water. It also makes the pool area feel much more enclosed from the inside. For these reasons, chain link with slats is not our recommended option for pool fencing in most situations.

Residential Chain Link Gates: Swing vs. Slide

Most residential chain link projects include at least one gate — a walk gate for side-yard access, a double swing gate for a backyard opening, or a driveway gate for vehicle access. The gate type depends on the opening size and available space.

Walk Gates and Double Swing Gates

Standard walk gates and double swing gates are the most common for residential use. They’re simple, reliable, and work well for pedestrian access and moderate-width openings like backyard entries and side yards.

Driveway Slide Gates: The Smart Choice for Short Driveways

For driveway access, we often recommend a slide gate over a swing gate for residential properties — and here’s why: Sacramento’s residential driveways are often shallow. When you pull a vehicle into a short driveway, a swing gate that opens inward may not have room to close behind the car because the vehicle is now in the swing path. Since swing gates can’t swing outward toward the sidewalk (that’s a code issue), shallow driveways and swing gates don’t mix well.

A slide gate solves this completely. It rolls sideways along the fence line when opened, hiding behind the adjacent fence. You only need to move one gate panel to open the full driveway width, and it doesn’t matter how short your driveway is because the gate never swings into the driving area. Slide gates also pair well with automated gate openers for added convenience.

V-Track vs. Front Roll Wheel Systems

When installing a residential slide gate, there are two track systems to choose from:

  • V-Track: A V-shaped metal track at ground level guides the gate in a perfectly straight line. The gate arrives at the latch point aligned every time. If your driveway is concrete and the gate’s landing area is also concrete, V-track is the best option — no additional work needed. If the landing area is landscaping or asphalt, you’ll need a concrete mow strip poured the full length of the gate’s travel, which adds cost.

  • Front Roll Wheel: The gate rolls on wheels mounted to the front of the frame with a rear pipe track for guidance. No ground-level track is needed, which makes this a good choice when the surface isn’t fully concrete or when pouring a mow strip isn’t practical.
FROM THE FIELD

For most residential slide gates on concrete driveways, V-track is our recommendation — the gate runs perfectly straight and latches cleanly. If your driveway is concrete but the gate slides open onto a landscaped area, factor in the cost of a concrete mow strip when comparing options.
