Why Choose a Steel Fence?

Security without blocking the view

See-through pickets keep an open feel while still defining and protecting your property — ideal for front yards, corner lots, and pool areas.

Built to last

Steel shrugs off the impacts, pests, and rot that age wood and vinyl. There’s no warping, no rotting posts, and no insect damage.

Low maintenance

Pre-galvanizing plus a powder-coat finish means no annual staining — just occasional touch-ups if the coating is ever scratched.

Timeless curb appeal

Classic black steel complements nearly any home or commercial exterior and tends to add long-term value.

Welded vs. Bracket-Connected Panels: Why It Matters

Not all steel fences are built the same way, and the connection method is where quality is won or lost. We install both styles and we’ll be straight with you about the trade-offs:

Welded connections (our quality standard)

Pickets are welded into the rails for a single, rigid panel with no exposed fasteners to fail. This is the most durable option and what we recommend for fences meant to last.

Bracket / bolted connections (budget option)

Panels attach with screws and brackets. It costs less up front, but we regularly see these in Folsom and El Dorado Hills where the bracket screws rusted through within a few years and panels began detaching.

Our take

If you want a fence you won’t think about again, choose welded panels with a pre-galvanized base and powder-coat finish. If budget is the priority, bracket-connected panels can work — just know the fasteners are the first thing to watch.

The Front-Yard Height Advantage

Here’s a local detail most homeowners don’t know: because steel is see-through, many Sacramento-area communities allow an iron front-yard fence up to 6 feet tall, while solid wood is typically capped at 3–4 feet in the same front-yard setback. If you want height and security out front without a variance, steel is often the only material that gets you there. Rules vary by city and HOA — check our Sacramento fence ordinance quick links or ask us during your free consultation.

Steel Fencing for Pools

Steel is a popular choice for pool enclosures because it combines visibility with strength. With the right picket spacing and self-closing, self-latching gates, an ornamental steel fence can be configured to meet California pool-safety requirements. See our pool fencing page for the code details.

Steel Driveway Gates & Automation

A matching steel driveway gate is the ultimate combination of curb appeal and security — from clean, minimalist designs to ornate patterns. Pair one with an automatic opener for hands-free convenience. Explore our gate installation options and automatic gate installation for openers, keypads, and access control.

Durability in Sacramento’s Climate

Steel fences are engineered for the Sacramento Valley’s extremes. Panels and posts are pre-galvanized and then powder-coated black, so they handle intense summer sun, winter rains, and the strong Delta winds without rusting or fading. The result is long-term performance with minimal maintenance — a smart fit for Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado, Yolo, Yuba, and Nevada Counties.

How Long Does a Steel Fence Last?

Properly installed, a quality steel or iron fence can last 50 years or more with periodic rust prevention — putting it near the top of the durability rankings for our region. For a full material-by-material breakdown, read our guide on what type of fence lasts the longest.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Pool Fencing

What’s the difference between steel, wrought iron, and ornamental iron fencing?

In everyday use these terms describe the same product. Today’s “wrought iron” look is almost always tubular steel that’s pre-galvanized and powder-coated — stronger and far more rust-resistant than the old wrought iron of decades past.

Are welded or bracket-connected panels better?

Welded panels are more durable because there are no exposed fasteners to corrode. Bracket-connected panels cost less but rely on screws that can rust and loosen over time — we’ve replaced many that failed within a few years.

How tall can my steel fence be?

Common heights are 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 feet. Because steel is see-through, many local front-yard rules allow taller iron fences than solid wood — but limits vary by city and HOA, so always confirm with your local ordinance or with us.

Does a steel fence need much maintenance?

Very little. The galvanizing and powder-coat finish resist rust and fading, so there’s no annual staining — just an occasional touch-up if the coating gets scratched.

Can a steel fence meet pool safety code?

Yes. With proper picket spacing and self-closing, self-latching gates, ornamental steel can be configured for California pool-safety compliance. See our pool fencing page.

How long does installation take?

Most steel fence and gate projects are finished in one to three days, depending on length, terrain, and whether an existing fence needs to be removed first.
