One of the most common questions that we get asked by our customers is if we recommend Pressure Treated Posts or Hidden Steel Posts? Lets discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each and we think the answer for you will be obvious!
Deciding between pressure-treated wood posts and hidden steel posts for your new fence depends on various factors, including your preferences, budget, and the specific requirements of your fencing project. Let’s go over the advantages and disadvantages of each option to help you make an informed decision:
Pressure-Treated Wood Posts:
Advantages:
- Cost: Pressure-treated wood posts are generally more affordable than hidden steel posts, making them a budget-friendly option. Being less expensive is really the only advantage of this older fence post style.
Disadvantages:
- While pressure-treated wood is designed to resist rot and insect damage, it is still very susceptible to decay over time, especially if exposed to moisture and soil. As the chemical compositions of treatment chemicals have changed over the recent years we are finding that they are NOT as effective as they used to be. We are seeing new pressure treated posts sometimes rotting out in as little as a few years. Because of this the durability of hidden steel posts much better.
- Prone to warping and splitting: Over time, wood posts can warp or split, affecting the fence’s stability and appearance.
Hidden Steel Posts:
Advantages:
- Durability: Steel posts are highly durable and resistant to weather, insects, and decay, ensuring a longer lifespan compared to wood.
- Low maintenance: Steel posts typically require minimal maintenance, as they won’t rot, warp, or need to be painted/stained.
- Asthetics: Hidden steel posts look very like a traditional wood post once we are done wrapping them. You get to enjoy the traditional look of a wood post you are used to, but with the durability and strength of steel.
- Stability: Steel posts provide excellent structural support and stability for the fence, especially in areas with high wind or heavy soil conditions.
Disadvantages:
- Cost: Hidden steel posts are generally more expensive than pressure-treated wood posts, which can increase the overall cost of your fence project. While they are slightly more expensive than a traditional pressure treated wood posts, these hidden steel posts will end up saving you a lot of money over the life of the fence, because they will make the fence last much longer with less maintenance.
