Here’s an idea we’ve seen work beautifully on multi-family properties: build a planned walk-up opening, about 3 to 4 feet wide, on the side of the enclosure. Residents can step right up to the side of the dumpster and toss their bags cleanly inside.

What material should I choose for a dumpster enclosure?
It comes down to your budget, your property’s look, and your security needs. Chain link with privacy slats is the most economical and very durable. Wood and redwood give a warm, natural look. Metal and corrugated steel are the toughest and most secure. We don’t recommend vinyl for dumpster enclosures — it cracks under the impact these areas take. How big does my dumpster enclosure need to be?
Size it around your dumpsters and the hauler’s access. The enclosure needs enough interior clearance for the bins plus room to roll them in and out, and the gate opening has to be wide enough for the truck to service it without awkward maneuvering. We design around the number and size of your bins and the space you have, so the finished enclosure works for your crew and your hauler.
How tall does the enclosure need to be?
Most commercial codes require the enclosure to fully screen the dumpster from public view, which usually means a minimum height of around 6 feet and a gate that screens the front when closed. We’ll confirm the right height during planning so the bins aren’t visible from the street or neighboring properties.
Why is the gate the most important part?
Because it takes the abuse. Garbage trucks, forklifts, and daily use are hard on gates, and a sagging or broken gate is the most common enclosure failure. We build heavy-duty gates with proper steel frames and commercial cane bolts / drop rods, and where a swing gate would block traffic or parking, we install a slide gate instead.
Are the gates lockable for security?
Yes. Most of our enclosures are built with lockable gates to keep unauthorized users out and contents secure between pickups. Tell us your security concerns during planning and we’ll build the hardware to match.
Do dumpster enclosures have to meet local regulations?
Often, yes. Sacramento-area properties may be subject to local zoning and building codes covering height, setbacks, screening, and fire safety.
