Barbed-wire topper option
A single strand on top discourages wildlife from jumping over and keeps cattle and horses from leaning over and pushing the fence down.
The simplest, lowest-cost option — ideal for large livestock on big acreage. Barbed wire attaches to a T-post every 10 feet and ties off to tension posts every few hundred feet.
Honest heads-up:
Barbed wire will not keep small animals, pets, or wildlife in or out, and it isn’t a safe choice for horses. If that’s your goal, woven wire is the better fence.

What’s the best fence for horses?
For horses, safety comes first. We recommend woven “no-climb” wire with tight 2” x 4” spacing so a hoof can’t pass through and get caught — the leading cause of serious fence injuries. Pairing it with a top rail or board improves visibility and stops horses from leaning the wire down.
We steer horse owners away from barbed wire. A panicked horse can tangle in it and suffer severe, sometimes career- or life-ending injuries. Typical horse fence height runs 54 to 60 inches.
What fence keeps predators out and small animals in?
Woven (no-climb) wire is the answer. Because the mesh runs all the way to the ground with no climbable gaps, it keeps coyotes and stray dogs out while keeping goats, sheep, poultry, and pets safely inside. Barbed wire and widely spaced rail fences won’t do this on their own — they need woven-wire mesh added.
Woven wire vs. barbed wire — which should I choose?
It comes down to what you’re containing. Barbed wire is the most economical option for large livestock on big acreage, but it won’t hold or exclude small animals and isn’t horse-safe. Woven wire costs more but gives you a true two-way barrier for mixed herds, smaller animals, and predator control. Many owners run woven wire on the perimeter and use barbed wire only where they’re fencing large cattle pastures.
How tall should a livestock fence be?
- Cattle: roughly 48–52 inches.
- Horses: 54–60 inches, depending on breed.
- Sheep & goats: about 40–48 inches, with tight mesh — goats are escape artists.
Wood corral fencing is commonly built around 5 feet. We’ll confirm the right height for your animals during the on-site visit.
How long does an agricultural fence last?
It depends mostly on the posts. Chain link can last 30–50 years; woven wire commonly runs 20+ years; vinyl lasts for decades with almost no upkeep. Wood is the wildcard — in Sacramento’s clay soil, posts are usually what fail first. That’s why we offer hidden steel posts, which can roughly double the lifespan of the fence.
How deep should fence posts go — and why do posts fail in our soil?
As a rule of thumb, a post should be set about one-third of its total length into the ground, over a gravel drainage base. Our local clay soil holds moisture against wood posts, and modern pressure-treated lumber rots faster than older formulations — the most common reason posts fail.
