A DuraBond steel fence should last 25 to 30 years in the Sacramento region, and often longer. That is a good ballpark from the fences we have installed, and it is well past what we see from redwood and vinyl today, which run closer to 15 to 20 years. Nothing on a DuraBond fence rots, warps, or burns; the only things that shorten its life are a hard impact or rust that goes untreated, and both are fixable.
This page is about how long DuraBond lasts in our six counties, what makes it last, what wears first, and what it takes to keep it looking new. Every DuraBond fence Fantastic Fence builds is backed by our one-year workmanship warranty.
DuraBond is the fence I would put on my own house if I lived in the foothills. Nothing on it rots, warps, or burns, and the only upkeep is a hose and a look for rust once a year. We are seeing it replace wood fences in regular neighborhoods now, not just the fire areas, because people are tired of rebuilding every fifteen years.

How Long Does a DuraBond Steel Fence Last Compared to Redwood and Vinyl?
About twice as long. Here is how we would ballpark the three fences we build most, in our climate, with our installation:
| Fence | Lifespan we expect | What ends it |
|---|---|---|
| DuraBond steel | 25–30+ years | Hard impact, or rust left untreated at a scratch or cut |
| Redwood (site-built, steel posts) | 15–20 years | Boards weather and loosen; posts last on steel |
| Vinyl | 15–20 years | Impact damage; hard-to-match replacement parts |
Lifespan is not the warranty. We stand behind our work for one year; the 25-to-30-year figure is how the fence actually performs. A fence that reaches 30 years with a hose and an occasional touch-up is a different purchase from one that needs new posts at year fifteen.
What Makes a DuraBond Steel Fence Last So Long?
Galvanized steel with a COLORBOND baked-on finish, assembled on site from posts, rails, and sheets. DuraBond is not powder coated, and it is not sold in panels; our crews build each run from components so it fits your grade and your property line. Per the manufacturer, the sheets are 0.42 mm steel on 0.6 mm structural rails with hidden fasteners, the system is engineered for wind gusts up to 123 mph, and it is non-combustible and Zone 0 ready. (Manufacturer specifications verified at durabondfencing.com, October 2026.)
- Nothing to rot, warp, or feed termites: the whole fence is steel, posts included.
- Nothing to burn: that is why it is the fence we build most in the foothill fire areas of Placer, El Dorado, and Nevada counties.
- Nothing to stain or seal: the color is baked on at the mill, not painted in your yard.
If you want the full comparison with ordinary steel fencing, our page on what makes DuraBond different from regular steel fencing covers it.
Does a DuraBond Steel Fence Rust?

Rarely, and only where the finish is broken. Watch for rust at scratches, mower chips, and cut edges; caught early, a spot of touch-up paint stops it. In time you may want to refresh the color, and several of our customers have done that with a high-quality automotive paint. Our page on whether steel fencing rusts over time goes deeper on how galvanized steel holds up here.
What Maintenance Does a DuraBond Fence Need to Reach 30 Years?
A hose and a yearly look. Rinse off dirt and sprinkler spray, keep soil and plants from piling against the bottom rail, and walk the fence once a year looking for scratches or rust spots to touch up. That is the whole list. There is no staining, sealing, or board replacement, which is most of what a wood fence costs over its life.
What Happens If a DuraBond Steel Fence Is Damaged?
We replace the piece, not the fence. Because DuraBond is built on site from posts, rails, and sheets, any one of them can be swapped: a sheet hit by a mower, a rail bent by a falling limb, or a post taken out by a car. Color match is not a problem, so a repaired section blends with the rest of the run.
Where Are Homeowners Choosing a DuraBond Steel Fence for Its Lifespan?
Two places. The foothill fire areas of Placer, El Dorado, and Nevada counties, where a non-combustible fence is the whole point, and ordinary neighborhoods across Sacramento and Placer counties where homeowners replacing a worn-out wood fence want the next one to be the last one. Some customers also tell us their insurer asked for non-combustible fencing near the house.

Had two durabond metal gates installed to meet dubious insurance requirements. They were installed quickly and efficiently by Saul and Angel. The two of them did the job in half the time I expected and cleanup was great.

Is a DuraBond Steel Fence Worth It for the Lifespan?
If you plan to be in the house more than a few years, usually yes. DuraBond is the top of our price ladder, above vinyl, iron, chain link, and redwood, but it is the only one you are unlikely to replace. Over 30 years that is one fence instead of two, with no staining or post replacement in between. Financing is available for Sacramento-region homeowners, and the Fence Price Calculator gives a ballpark before an estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is DuraBond powder coated?
No. DuraBond has a COLORBOND finish baked onto galvanized steel at the mill. The only powder-coated fence we install is ornamental iron.
What colors and heights does DuraBond come in?
The manufacturer stocks Jasper, Woodland Grey, and Monument domestically, with more colors on order, in 6-foot and 7-foot heights. Seven feet is the tallest fence we build (only in Monument color).
Can a DuraBond fence go on a slope?
Yes. Because it is assembled on site rather than hung as panels, the sheets and rails follow the grade without the stair-stepped gaps you get under pre-made panels.
What warranty comes with a DuraBond fence from Fantastic Fence?
A one-year workmanship warranty on the installation. Ask your estimator about current manufacturer coverage on the materials.
